Renbrook School, an independent day school serving students from age three through grade eight, seeks an experienced, full-time Buildings and Grounds Staff Position to join its Buildings & Grounds Department. This position supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the School’s buildings, grounds, mechanical and electrical systems, equipment, and outdoor spaces for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Buildings and Grounds Staff Member performs general maintenance, preventive maintenance, repairs, groundskeeping, event support, and seasonal work. The role requires independent judgment, effective collaboration, and flexibility to respond to snowstorms, weather-related incidents, emergencies, and occasional early-morning or weekend needs.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment, machines, and vehicles.
  • Maintain the maintenance garage, shop, tools, and work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  • Assist with classroom and office moves.
  • Remove snow and ice using plows, snow blowers, shovels, and related equipment, including during early mornings and weekends when necessary.
  • Set up, break down, and clean spaces for school activities and events.
  • Perform mowing, landscaping, turf maintenance, and other groundskeeping tasks.
  • Complete minor repairs and routine maintenance on campus buildings, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and follow all School emergency procedures.
  • Follow applicable safety, health, and environmental requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Use personal protective equipment and operate tools, ladders, vehicles, chemicals, and powered equipment safely.
  • Communicate effectively and provide timely, courteous service to members of the school community.
  • Collaborate with other school departments to meet deadlines, minimize disruption to classes and activities, and support the School’s mission.
  • Maintain professional conduct, appropriate boundaries, confidentiality, and safe work areas in an occupied school environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities.
  • Model integrity, responsibility, and respect for all people.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in facilities, building maintenance, or grounds operations.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate vehicles and maintenance equipment safely.
  • Experience operating lawn and grounds-maintenance equipment.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and the ability to follow applicable safety guidelines consistently.
  • Experience reading chemical labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Basic proficiency with computers, email, and maintenance or work-order software.
  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision and establish cooperative working relationships with school employees.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade-school training, certification, licensure, or other relevant technical education.
  • Experience with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, building repairs, or building automation systems.
  • Experience working in a school or another occupied institutional facility.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Work indoors and outdoors throughout the year in conditions that may include heat, cold, rain, snow, noise, dust, chemicals, and uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all other school employees.
  • Remain available for work during snowstorms, weather-related incidents, and other operational emergencies.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods and regularly climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull objects and materials weighing 20–50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier items.
  • Safely operate vehicles, machines, ladders, tools, and powered equipment required for assigned duties.
