Job Summary

Westover School seeks an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and student-centered Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach for the Winter 2026–2027 athletic season. The Assistant Coach will work closely with the Varsity Basketball Head Coach to support practices, competitions, player development, and the overall experience of student-athletes.

The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of basketball fundamentals and game strategy, enjoys working with young people, and is excited to contribute to a positive and competitive team environment. Previous coaching experience is preferred, though candidates with a strong playing background and demonstrated knowledge of the game are also encouraged to apply.

The winter athletic season generally runs from November through early March. Practices are typically held on weekday afternoons, with competitions generally scheduled on Wednesdays and Saturdays, along with occasional additional contests.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist the Varsity Head Coach in planning and leading organized, engaging, and developmentally appropriate practices.

  • Provide instruction and feedback to help student-athletes develop basketball fundamentals, skills, game awareness, and strategy.

  • Support the Head Coach during games, practices, and other team activities.

  • Help foster a positive, competitive, inclusive, and supportive team culture.

  • Encourage teamwork, sportsmanship, accountability, and confidence among student-athletes.

  • Assist with the supervision, health, safety, and well-being of student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and team activities.

  • Travel with the team to away competitions as needed.

  • Collaborate with the Varsity Head Coach, Junior Varsity Coach, and Athletics Department to support the overall basketball program.

  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with student-athletes, families, coaches, officials, and members of the Athletics Department.

  • Follow the expectations and policies outlined in Westover School's Employee and Coaching Handbooks.

  • Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to Westover's mission and values.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, skill development, and game strategy.

  • Previous basketball coaching experience preferred, particularly at the high school, club, or collegiate level.

  • Competitive playing experience or other demonstrated basketball experience welcomed.

  • Ability to effectively teach, communicate, and provide constructive feedback to student-athletes.

  • Enthusiasm for working with adolescents and supporting their growth both as athletes and individuals.

  • Collaborative approach and ability to work effectively with the Varsity Head Coach and broader Athletics Department.

  • Reliable, organized, and able to provide appropriate supervision and leadership.

  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain prior to the season.

  • Valid Connecticut driver's license with a Public Passenger ("A") endorsement preferred, or willingness to obtain if required.

  • Successful completion of all required state and federal background checks.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a gymnasium and other athletic facilities. The position requires availability during weekday afternoons and evenings, as well as Saturdays throughout the winter athletic season. The coach will travel with the team to away contests as needed using school-provided transportation.

The athletic schedule is determined by the competition calendar and may include occasional Monday or Friday contests, evening commitments, and schedule changes due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to actively participate in practices and games, including demonstrating basketball skills and standing for extended periods.

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move basketball and athletic equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.

  • Ability to travel with the team to away contests.
