Renbrook School (West Hartford, CT), an independent day school for children age three to grade eight, currently seeks a Director of Library Services for a parental leave – January 2027 through June 2027.

Renbrook’s library is staffed by a Director of Library Services who possesses a wide range of interpersonal, administrative, technical, and leadership skills to successfully lead Renbrook’s library program for students in grades preschool through grade eight. The responsibilities are broken down into three distinct categories: instructional liaison, media specialist administrator, information specialist. An important responsibility in this area of the job is the ability to create an atmosphere within the library that encourages people to come in and utilize both the resources and the space. Renbrook’s library should be a vibrant hub of activity for students and faculty throughout the day.

As an instructional liaison, the Director is expected to:

  • Partner with teachers to design and support inquiry-based learning experiences.
  • Teach weekly library classes to students in the Beginning School (pre-school, junior kindergarten, and kindergarten).
  • Foster a lifelong love of reading and learning.

As a media specialist, the Director is expected to:

  • Locate and share library books, digital resources, and multimedia materials.
  • Select and maintain media that will support curriculum needs and student interests.
  • Prepare materials for circulation.

As an information specialist the Director is expected to:

  • Model for students the strategies for locating, accessing, and evaluating information within and beyond the school library.
  • Curate materials for faculty instructional needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors and/or Master's Degree in library science or related field
  • Teaching experience
  • Experience in classroom management and pedagogy to meet the needs of all learners
  • Knowledge of children’s literature
  • Technical skill including experience with databases and web-based research

Personal traits for nurturing the growth of children and working cooperatively with adults: kind, enthusiastic, flexible, patient, able to communicate clearly, and sense of humor.

The review of candidates will begin immediately with an expected start date in January 2027 with some training that could take place in December 2026.
