Renbrook School (West Hartford, CT), an independent day school for children age three to Grade 8, seeks a full-time STEAM teacher in the Upper School (Grades 5-8). With a strong tradition of science and design-build courses and an institutional commitment to a maker-mindset, program requires a creative teacher who is willing to learn on the job. Ideal candidates will have teaching experience with complimentary "maker”, fabrication, and woodworking skills.

The successful candidate will have many of the following qualifications:

  • Experience working with or teaching children, particularly in an independent, day, college preparatory or like school setting.
  • A love and enthusiasm for teaching middle school.
  • Strong references that convey teaching ability, capacity to connect with students, and mastery of subject area.
  • Experience in direct instruction, inquiry-based learning, and cooperative learning with a focus on a student-centered approach.
  • Skills, talents, and flexibility for contributing to an independent school community in additional capacities.  For example: coaching sports, leading homeroom, advising extracurricular activities, etc.
  • Proven history of building positive relationships with and among students, parents, and faculty.
  • An open mind and an appreciative mindset with a singular dedication to serving children.
  • A Master's Degree (preferred) orBachelor's Degree with experience in a STEAM-related field.
  • Optional experience with Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing.

Our vision for the position:

  • Teach a Grade 5 Science course and a course in design/build that incorporates woodworking and other construction materials.
  • Work closely with STEAM teachers in the creation of collaborative projects.
  • Develop students’ foundational “builder skill set” and complimentary “maker mindset” to balance the creative with the skills to create and execute a plan.
  • Develop and manage the woodworking/maker space.
  • Develop an understanding of Renbrook’s other Upper School courses to facilitate interdisciplinary building projects for “push-in” opportunities.
