ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Southport School (TSS), located in historic Southport Village, was founded in 1984 and serves up to 125 students with language-based learning differences like dyslexia and attention issues like ADHD. POSITION OVERVIEW

The lead teacher’s role includes, but is not limited to, being a lead teacher of five academic classes (subjects may include a mix of Social Studies, Science, Math, Writing, Humanities, Literacy and Language, and/or Literature). Class load may be adjusted based on other duties assigned.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Planning and providing individualized instruction in various subjects as designated by the Director of Education and Instructional Technology
  • Participating in school activities and duties as assigned
  • Writing student progress reports
  • Attending training workshops, faculty in-service, and staff meetings 
  • Completing training in the following, in addition to state-mandated training (at time of hire or as assigned):
    • Orton Gillingham
    • The Writing Revolution
    • Executive Function 
    • Visualizing and Verbalizing
    • Standard First Aid
  • Lunchroom and duty coverage - when assigned during the week
  • Attendance at Parent/Guardian Events (e.g., Meet the Teacher Night, Parent and Guardian Conference afternoon/evenings, Year End Programs) 
  • Punctual preparation of required reports, progress monitoring, and other requested information (e.g., shared commitments, transition forms, student feedback, etc.)
  • Maintain appropriate State of Connecticut teacher certification.
  • Participate in Summer Programs as directed. There is an additional stipend for this program.
  • Assistance in developing and/or in teaching various training programs to be used internally at TSS or provided to other educators
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School and his/her representatives.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Teaching certification is required. The ideal candidate holds Connecticut teaching certification in Special Education and/or Elementary Education, or a specific content area. In addition, the candidate must be a good collaborator and creative educator who can engage students and can embrace the strengths, talents, and potential of students with language-based learning differences and ADD.

 

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Current Connecticut teaching certification, or willing to convert an out-of-state teaching certificate to Connecticut
  • Reliably commute to Southport, CT
  • Self-starter who can work independently or as part of a cross-functional team
  • Positive attitude and ability to build rapport with students, staff, and parents
  • Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to be flexible and work in a fast-paced environment

 

Preferred

  • Experience working with children
  • Training in Structured Literacy

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Frequently required to stand/walk.
  • Occasionally required to sit.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. 
  • Occasional evening hours are required for special events
