New Canaan Country School is a co-ed, independent day school for students in Pre-K (ages 3 & 4) through Grade 9 living in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. About the Coding and Maker Teacher Position
The coding and maker program at Country School serves children in Grades 1 through 9. Our curriculum supports creativity and thoughtful use of technology in alignment with our mission and core values of community, courage, curiosity and kindness. The school is seeking a collaborative and student-centered Lower & Middle School Coding and Maker Teacher to support and deliver our established maker, robotics, and coding program.
This educator will work within a strong existing framework, guiding students from hands-on exploration in the Lower School to more structured problem-solving and design thinking in the Middle School. The ideal candidate understands how children learn at different developmental stages, is comfortable teaching entry-level coding through 3D design, and brings experience with maker education and robotics. The role also includes student and faculty-facing technology support in collaboration with the Technology Team.
Primary Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Learning
- Teach maker, robotics, and introductory coding classes for students in Grades 1–9
- Implement and support the existing NCCS maker and coding curriculum
- Differentiate instruction to meet developmental needs across Lower and Middle School
- Introduce foundational coding concepts using block-based and beginner-friendly tools
- Foster creativity, collaboration, perseverance, and problem-solving
Maker & Robotics Program Support
- Facilitate hands-on maker and robotics experiences using LEGO-based and similar platforms
- Guide students through the design–build–test–iterate process
- Maintain and organize maker materials, robotics kits, and classroom tools
- Support safe and effective use of the Innovation space and equipment
Technology & Helpdesk Support
- Provide first-level technology support for students and faculty
- Allocate by a defined portion of the role to student- and faculty-facing technology support, while maintaining a primary focus on teaching, curriculum support, and instructional engagement within the Maker and Coding program
- Assist with basic troubleshooting of devices (Grades 1-6 iPads and Grades 7-9 Mac laptops), software, and mobile equipment
- Coordinate with the Technology Team to escalate issues as needed
- Model responsible and developmentally appropriate technology use
Collaboration & Community
- Collaborate with Technology Team and classroom teachers to support interdisciplinary learning
- Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues
- Contribute positively to the school community and uphold NCCS values
Qualifications
Required
- Experience working with children and adolescents across multiple age groups
- Bachelor's degree or higher
- Strong understanding of child and adolescent development
- Comfort teaching entry-level and block-based coding
- Experience with maker education and robotics (LEGO-based robotics acceptable)
- Ability to provide basic, student-facing technology support
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
Preferred
- Teaching experience in an independent school setting
- Familiarity with project-based learning or design-thinking approaches
- Experience working alongside a school Technology Department
- Background in education, engineering, design, or a related field
