The Norwich Free Academy is seeking an Athletic Trainer. The goal of the Athletic Trainer is to provide high-quality, professional athletic training services to Norwich Free Academy student-athletes year-round. The Certified Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries under the direction of the Academy's designated physician. This position ensures continuity of care for athletes during the school year and summer months, promoting safe training, recovery, and performance across all programs. This is a full-time, 12-month position providing comprehensive coverage for Norwich Free Academy's interscholastic athletics and summer conditioning programs. 

Compensation: $70,000 - $75,000 (commensurate with experience and credentials). Hockey Event Coverage (Potential Additional Earnings): In addition to the base salary, the Athletic Trainer may be eligible for a $225 per-game stipend for boys' ice hockey event coverage when assigned. Based on an estimated schedule, this may result in up to $5,625 in potential additional annual earnings. Actual earnings depend on assignment and event schedule and are not guaranteed.. Full benefits package, retirement contributions, vacation, and paid time off. Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Must adhere to all applicable federal, state, and CIAC regulations concerning student-athlete health, safety, concussion management, heat illness prevention, and return-to-play protocols.
  2. Provide on-site coverage for practices and athletic contests across all sports seasons in coordination with the Athletic Director and coaching staff.
  3. Evaluate, treat, and rehabilitate athletic injuries and illnesses within the scope of athletic training practice and under the direction of the team physician.
  4. Maintain accurate injury and treatment records using the district's approved system.
  5. Implement and monitor injury prevention and conditioning programs.
  6. Administer emergency care and make appropriate medical referrals as necessary.
  7. Coordinate with the team physician, school nurse, and parents on injury management and return-to-play decisions.
  8. Provide continued summer coverage for conditioning programs, camps, and athletic-related training activities.
  9. Ensure compliance with all CIAC, NFA, and state regulations related to student-athlete health and safety, including concussion and heat illness management protocols.

 

Program Administration:

  1. Develop and maintain standing orders with the supervising physician in compliance with Connecticut General Statute Chapter 375a.
  2. Maintain an organized athletic training room, inventory of supplies, and first-aid/equipment kits for all teams.
  3. Assist the Athletic Director in developing and implementing safety and emergency action plans for all athletic venues.
  4. Participate in pre-season physicals, baseline testing, and staff in-service training as requested.
  5. Communicate effectively with coaches, administrators, parents, and healthcare providers regarding athlete status and restrictions.
  6. Participate in periodic meetings with the Athletic Department and Health Services staff to coordinate care and coverage.
  7. Support educational outreach for student-athletes and coaches on injury prevention and health topics.
  8. Coordinate off-season and summer conditioning programs, ensuring appropriate supervision and medical oversight.

 

Professionalism and Compliance

  1. Maintain confidentiality of student health information in accordance with FERPA/HIPAA regulations.
  2. Maintain current professional licensure, certification, and continuing education units (CEUs) as required by the Connecticut Department of Public Health and BOC.
  3. Adhere to all NFA policies, state laws, and professional standards of practice for athletic trainers.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Athletic Training or a related health science field.
  2. Current Connecticut Athletic Trainer License (or eligibility to obtain before start date).
  3. Current BOC Certification (Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers).
  4. CPR/AED and First Aid Certification for the Professional Rescuer.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with student-athletes, coaches, nurses, administrators, and parents.
  6. Experience in a high school, collegiate, or sports medicine setting preferred.
  7. Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  8. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Schedule and Coverage Structure 
Full-time, 12-month schedule to include afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays during athletic seasons, and coverage for summer conditioning programs and athletic camps.
Schedule determined by the Athletic Director and may vary by season to ensure optimal coverage for all practices, contests, and training activities.

Evaluation:
Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Academy's policy on the evaluation of administrative staff.
