Washington Montessori School seeks a Middle School Humanities Head Teacher. The most competitive applicants will be experienced and ethical educators, preferably with Montessori training, who can guide 6th-8th grade students through an integrated curriculum of History, Literature, and English language skills. The Head Teacher is responsible for developing curriculum, maintaining an attractive, prepared, and materials-rich classroom, designing intellectually engaging, student centered lessons, and ensuring all students make effective academic progress through differentiated instruction. Crucially, this educator should be invested in cultivating a peaceful and just classroom community and must be willing to engage fully in the middle school program which includes advising students and participating regularly in off campus trips and field experience.  

 

This individual will:

 

  • Teach two sections of 7/8th Grade Humanities, an Immersion course, and 2 sections of Language Skills.
  • Possess the desire and capacity to learn about Montessori education and to work collaboratively with students, parents, and colleagues in line with our mission.
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of Middle School students.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and grade levels.
  • Demonstrate a genuine passion for and command of the subject matter and enthusiasm for teaching middle school students.
  • Scaffold and differentiate instruction for a range of learners.
  • Lead students by example and with empathy, building a healthy and positive culture that can weather and grow through conflict. 
  • Build resilient relationships, uphold rules and standards, and resolve conflicts among students through student centered and restorative approaches. 
  • Possess a commitment to implementing best practices for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and willingness to learn about and enact the Montessori values of peace and justice. 
  • Cultivate and maintain supportive relationships with students, colleagues, and families; follow up regularly with parents on students’ academic progress, social growth, and learning needs at designated times of the year and through additional meetings as necessary.
  • Demonstrate competence with current educational technology; possesses facility with electronic communication and learning management systems.
  • Participate actively in the Middle School community, including division and all school meetings, assigned non-instructional duties, overnight field trips, day trips, and our advisory program.
