Classics/Latin Teacher (Part-Time)

The Williams School - New London, CT
Part-time
Application Deadline: N/A
Teaching

The Williams School seeks an enthusiastic and adaptable part-time Classics teacher to join our Classics Department beginning in the 2025–2026 academic year. The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach three sections of Latin, mostly introductory levels. The position requires skill in creating engaging, student-centered lessons that develop language proficiency and cultural understanding. Applicants must be enthusiastic and energetic, foster intellectual curiosity, and be willing to teach as a member of a team in conjunction with other department members. The School uses the Suburani curriculum for the lower levels of Latin instruction, Athenaze for introductory Greek, which is included in Level III language instruction, and unaltered texts of Pliny, Cicero, and Vergil for the upper levels. Effective communication with students, families, and colleagues, attendance at departmental and faculty meetings, and full participation in the life of the school are also expected. Previous experience teaching in an independent school setting, a Bachelor’s degree in Latin, Classics, or a related field, and a deep understanding of Classical languages and culture is preferred.

In 2014, Williams moved beyond the AP model to offer self-developed advanced courses in all disciplines. In the 2022-2023 academic year, two distinct opportunities began for students to take their learning to a higher level of engagement with greater academic maturity. Four certificate programs: Environmental Sustainability, Global Perspectives, Humanities, and STEM were introduced for students to engage in over the course of their sophomore through senior years. Students complete a research and/or professional exploration component and present their certificate work to a committee. In addition, the College Acceleration Program offers juniors and seniors a full semester of college courses and corresponding credits. Over the course of their junior and senior years, students will take courses at Williams plus one course per semester at Connecticut College. By graduation, students successfully completing the program will gain a transcript from Connecticut College alongside their Williams diploma. The Classics instruction at Williams has inspired students to engage in Certificates related to Classical culture and to take Classics-related classes at Connecticut College.

How To Apply:

Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume, and educational philosophy to Mrs. Chelsea Rallis (Director of the Upper School Teaching and Learning) at [email protected]. Please no phone inquiries.
