Student leadership and well-being are connected to every academic discipline, as all full-time teachers are also grade-level advisors. 

The school offers a coed program for young children at the Barat Center for Early Childhood Education and then an all-girls experience from K-12 on our 110-acre campus in Greenwich, Connecticut.  We are proudly part of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools.

We are currently seeking an Assistant Head of Middle School for Student Life for the 2025-2026 school year. 

Position: Assistant Head of Middle School for Student Life
Reports to: Head of Middle School
FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Summary

The Assistant Head of Middle School works in partnership with the Head of Middle School to provide leadership and programming in the areas of student life, culture, activities, social-emotional development and discipline. This includes fostering, among faculty and students, a positive and caring atmosphere and a strong Middle School community. This position will also involve teaching one course in their subject area or our wellness courses/mini-courses.

Essential Functions

Student Support and Discipline

  • Be aware of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the school community, and develop and execute plans for meeting those needs
  • Establish guidelines for proper student conduct and manage a disciplinary program that is restorative for both the student and Middle School community
  • Follow-up on attendance and protocols
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with parents to create a cooperative relationship to support the student experience in the Middle School
  • Oversee all correspondence relating to student life programs, discipline and procedures
  • Collaborate  with faculty to set standard processes, support faculty in implementing policies and expectations, and evaluate effectiveness of policies
  • Assist students with personal difficulties and issues. Serves as the liaison between the student and school psychologist.
  • Coordinate meetings with faculty, parents, or administrators related to discipline 

Student Activities and Programing Coordination

  • Oversee and coordinate co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and programs which foster growth within the school and the outside community that reflect the spirit and Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart.
  • Arrange educational and informative speakers and presentations that serve many purposes such as bonding among students, building community spirit and educating students about important issues. 
  • Moderate the Student Council, including an orientation program, to help students build leadership skills.
  • Along with the Head of Middle School, oversee the Advisory system. Help Advisors manage student problems and concerns. Generate advisor meeting agendas and curriculum.
  • Plan and implement major Middle School events and traditions, including such things as Conge, Gouter, and Field Day.
  • Collaborate with the Campus Minister in building community through our retreat program. Attend class retreats.
  • Maintain the budget for Middle School student activities 
  • Attend evening and weekend events such as dances or other student social events and parent meetings. 
  • Serve as the acting Head of MS when the head is unavailable or absent. 

Faculty Support

  • Manage and lead all teacher leave of absence, attendance & daily substitution logistics, and plans;
  • Manage Middle School faculty supervision and responsibilities;
  • Support Grade Level Team Leaders & Dean of Student
  • Support the Head of MS with all events and programming
  • Support the Head of MS with faculty observations, instructional enhancements and professional development

 

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have previous experience in administration and /or faculty leadership roles
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master's or equivalent experience in independent schools
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills
  • 5+ years’ experience as a classroom educator, ideally in an independent school environment
  • Strategic thinker and empathetic problem solver
  • Proficiency with technology including Google suite and data management systems such as Blackbaud
