Elementary School Teacher, Grades 1-2

The Mead School, a small, PreK-8 progressive independent school in Stamford CT, founded in 1969, seeks a talented elementary school educator for a self-contained classroom in grades 1 and 2. This work requires expertise in grades 1-2 Language Arts (reading, writing, and phonics) and Social Studies. Mead has specialists in the other subjects.

Our class sizes range from 5-12 students (one class per grade). A successful candidate for this position will:

• Have taught Language Arts in Lower Elementary School
• Be skilled at differentiating instruction, particularly for capable children who often learn differently; i.e. experience in special education not required but preferred
• Understand the importance of developing authentic relationships with students and prioritize this in practice
• Be familiar with a broad spectrum of children’s literature
• Enjoy learning from others
• Be familiar with a variety of reading programs and techniques for training young readers, as well as have experience in several approaches to teaching writing
• Have training in both a phonemic approach to teaching reading as well as more holistic methods
• Interested in and capable of designing and implementing curriculum
• Be flexible, i.e. open minded about designing and adapting curriculum
• be an enthusiastic collaborator with the 1-2 team on integrated curriculum and opportunities for project based learning.

Candidates for this job will prize collaboration with a small, dedicated faculty in a school that above all values the social and emotional development of children.

Candidates should have 3+ years of experience and have or seek a Masters Degree in Teaching; and/or a certification in Elementary School teaching.
