our summer program. The Lead Teacher is responsible for the planning and execution of their

summer curriculum for their students and for creating a classroom environment that supports

About Horizons

Started in 1964 as a small summer program, Horizons at New Canaan Country School has

grown to be a full year K - post HS academic and enrichment program serving close to 400

students from Stamford and Norwalk. The program aims to help close the opportunity gap

experienced by under-resourced students by providing opportunities for academic and overall

personal development so that they are able to pursue their dreams and fulfill their ultimate

potential.

About the Horizons Summer Program

The 6-week summer program hosted at New Canaan Country School is for our K-9 students.

Students have a daily schedule that includes academics, enrichments (including sports, art, and

music), and daily afternoon swimming. Class size is 10-12 students and the teacher, aided by a

Teaching Assistant, has the opportunity to design a curriculum that fits the needs of the

students emphasizing project-based learning and creative ways of teaching content. We have a

veteran and diverse faculty who share a commitment to our students and their families.

When will the Horizons Summer Program start and end?

We are planning to hold an in-person orientation on June 19, 2025 and June 20, 2025 for all

staff. The summer program will begin on June 23, 2025, and end on August 1, 2025.  

Responsibilities:

The Math Coach will be responsible for the following:

  • Curriculum Development Support: Collaborating with Jr. Program Lead Teachers to support the development and implementation of a rigorous and engaging mathematics curriculum that aligns with CT priority standards and emphasizes project-based learning and creative teaching methods.
  • Instructional Coaching: Providing ongoing support and coaching to Jr. Program Lead Teachers to enhance their mathematics instruction, including modeling effective strategies, offering feedback, and sharing best practices.
  • Curriculum Alignment: Ensuring consistency and alignment of the mathematics curriculum across the Jr. Program, fostering a cohesive learning experience for all students.
  • Resource Development: Identifying and curating high-quality mathematics resources and materials to support teachers and student learning.
  • Assessment Support: Assisting teachers in understanding and utilizing various assessment data (including potential standardized assessments) to inform instruction and differentiate learning for individual student needs.
  • Professional Development: Participating in and potentially leading professional development opportunities for Jr. Program teachers focused on effective mathematics instruction and pedagogy.
  • Classroom Environment: Supporting the creation of classroom environments that foster a growth mindset, encourage risk-taking in mathematical problem-solving, and affirm student leadership in their learning.
  • Collaboration: Partnering with Jr. Program Lead Teachers and other colleagues to ensure a consistent and enriching overall student experience that connects to the summer theme.
  • Student Engagement: Observing and interacting with students in classrooms to gain insights into their mathematical understanding and provide targeted support to teachers 
Requirements

The ideal applicant will demonstrate the following:

  • Deep Understanding of Mathematics Education: A strong foundation in mathematics content and pedagogy, with a clear understanding of best practices in teaching and learning mathematics for elementary-aged students (K-5).
  • Commitment to the Horizons Mission: A genuine commitment to the Horizons mission and a deep belief in the potential of each child, particularly those from under-resourced communities.
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: The ability to build positive and collaborative relationships with teachers, families, and colleagues in a short timeframe.
  • Instructional Leadership: Experience providing instructional coaching and support to teachers, with a focus on improving mathematics instruction.
  • Curriculum Expertise: Experience in developing or supporting the development of engaging and effective mathematics curriculum and activities, ideally incorporating project-based learning.
  • Data Analysis Skills: Experience in understanding and interpreting various forms of assessment data to inform instructional practices.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to the dynamic nature of a summer program.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of teaching experience preferred, with a focus on elementary mathematics. A Bachelor’s Degree is required; a Master's Degree in Mathematics Education or a related field is a plus.
