The Director of Teaching & Learning is a twelve-month senior administrative and teaching position reporting directly to the Head of School. The Director is responsible for the ongoing growth and quality of teaching and learning, providing vision and support for excellence in all areas of the student experience at The Williams School.

Responsibilities

  • Continue to develop and articulate the vision for all aspects of the Williams program by staying current with research, educational philosophy, and national and regional trends in education
  • Observe faculty annually and serve as a thought partner for new and veteran teachers as they continue to develop their classroom practice
  • Meet regularly with direct reports: Upper School Dean, Middle School Dean, School Counselor, Learning Support Teacher 
  • Assign faculty to classrooms, duties, and study hall proctoring
  • Oversee recruitment, supervision, evaluation, and mentoring of faculty 
  • Work closely with Departmental Leads to articulate goals and determine priorities for their areas 
  • Plan and implement professional development opportunities for faculty, including planning and leading faculty meetings 
  • Support the Director of College Counseling by reading and editing drafts of College Appraisals for Seniors
  • Continue to develop and oversee the College Acceleration Program and Interdisciplinary Certificate Program
  • Coordinate substitute teachers
  • Work with the Director of Technology and Upper School Dean to generate course sections, the master schedule, and individual schedules for students and faculty
  • Work with the US and MS Deans to plan the mid-morning activities, mentor/mentee activities, student events, and assemblies
  • Liaison with Connecticut College for Human Development student classroom observations, Arboretum trips, Shain Library privileges, and substitutes
  • Update and maintain course descriptions, book lists, and summer assignments
  • Maintain the Faculty Resource Board on myW
  • Assist with the onboarding of new students and families in the summer months
  • Coordinate registration of students taking online courses with One Schoolhouse or other approved educational organizations
  • Oversee student honors and awards, and preside with Head of School at Convocation and Commencement
  • Maintain, coordinate, and oversee school-sponsored field trips and travel
  • Oversee Teaching & Learning budget
  • Serve as member of administrative team and support the initiatives of each area
  • Teach one section as needed and serve as an Upper School Advisor
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School

The ideal candidate will have independent School teaching and administrative experience working with faculty, staff, parents, and students. In addition, the candidate will be a highly visible and engaged leader who is enthusiastically involved in the daily life of the school. Experience in strategic planning and curriculum development would serve this position well.
